Coloring the World

by

I just read Sherry’s commentary on my review of The Department of Lost & Found — here’s a quote from her comment:

“I said recently to someone that I want to decorate the world. Color is important, being bold, living life full, in my face, loud and noticeable. I don’t think it’s for everyone else. I know it is for “me”. I want to remind myself every day that I am here, that I am alive and vibrant.”

I had to laugh … I so clearly remember the day I brought home a green tiki umbrella for the patio table on our deck. I mean heck, if that wasn’t a bold post-cancer move on my part, I don’t know what was! To this day I love my umbrella. It has faded quite a bit, but each time I sit under it, I just smile and feel me.

Now it’s your turn. What have you done post-Cancer that is alive and vibrant? And Sherry … I want specifics about how you’ve colored the world!

So far the only colouring of the world I’ve done is with my hair!! When it was growning back in (a dull grey like dryer lint and a brown and a bit of auburn..it was strange looking!). I started with a bright auburn; then I went to a dark, dark auburn like a deep cherry and added bits of gold highlights (did all these ones myself). Got fed up with colouring at home so went to my stylist as soon as my hair was long enough and she coloured it blonde but it looked a little to yellow for me. Let that grow a bit and when I went back we did a medium auburn on top and Tracy (my fabulous stylist), added a “ring” all around the underneath of fire engine red. I’m now back to blonde with highlights but this time, underneath the whole back is a chocolate brown under the blonde.

I’m seeking clothing that is bright and colourful..looking for patterns where I would only have worn solids before.

My home is decorated in cottage country/French country and I have dijon yellow walls and my dining room wall is a foxfire red.

I’m decorating the world with words, with gestures, with a smile to every person I pass, making conversation with people, finding my joy, making a difference. You honestly never know when that smile or that hello has made someone else’s sad day just a little brighter.

I love that you wanted a green umbrella for the table Karen. It’s about seeing things with fresh eyes, it’s about seeing the depth that we might have missed before. And reminding ourselves visually as often as possible, “see me world? I’m still here…loud and proud”!!

Hopefully this photo will print Karen…it will show you my “crazy sexy hair” with the fire engine red and auburn; the dijon yellow walls and the foxfire red dining room wall.

It’s all about “colour”…even to putting dark sparkly blue polish on my toes when the mood strikes!

If this one doesn’t work, you’ll have to tell me how to post a photo on your blog and then I would be happy to share!!! :)

  4. Karen Lynch Says:

Sherry, I love your hair color — love it!

Me, I grew mine long … it’s longer than it has ever been in my life. I’ve grown it because, well, I could — I had hair.

Great point you made, these are visual reminders that we are ALIVE!

  5. Sherry Says:

Oh good, you were able to see the funky colour!!!

Having long hair would be a joy ~ as you said, you grew it long…because you could. I can’t think of a better reason than that!!
