National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Starts NOW

by

October.jpegDid you know that National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) started in 1985?

Did you know that the entire point of NBCAM is to increase awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer?

That’s why I think NBCAM ROCKS!!

Here’s a quote straight from the American Cancer Society“The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign.”

ribbon.jpegI don’t necessarily think people get the point — the message about early detection is lost amidst pink ribbons and Susan G. Komen for the Cure signage. Not that those are bad things … but bland breast cancer associations often overshadow the true message.

It’s such an important message, though, I hate that it might get lost. I’ve talked about it time and time again … remember this post about when to start getting mammograms?

So, this month, as you look up and down the grocery store aisles and see a sea of pink products, or scan the newsstands and see the words ‘breast cancer’ smattered on almost every cover, or see pink ribbons on every store in town … think about the meaning of NBCAM — the importance of early detection. How can you do your part to make people more aware that early detection saves lives?

Tell them my story, for one.

Remember, I was 35 years old. No family history. No lump to speak of or to feel in a self-breast exam. But the cancer was there … growing. Waiting. Exposed early with a baseline mammogram.

Detected. EARLY!

Anyway … welcome to NBCAM!!!

yes, it is national breast cancer awareness month …and i think we can all do our parts …we can all make a big difference by doing small things …donate any amount of money, even 5 dollars, to a BC organization …small choices making big differences …you can do it at websites like respectance, which has no service fee, or a number of other great resources …the point is that we all can help.
