Inspiring Others

When I sifted through my email inbox this morning, I found one from Ford. Someone created a special Warriors in Pink patch on their Virtual Quilt in my honor. I followed the link and searched for Karen Lynch and there it was …

THAT is why I do what I do. Thank you, my anonymous virtual quilter! I love it.

I’m a Warrior in Pink

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Ford.jpegThe Ford Warriors in Pink campaign began just last year and generated more than $1.1 million in sales. All net profits went towards the Komen for the Cure. This year Ford hopes to be beat last year’s record and donate even more.

A representative for Ford recently found this site and mailed me a fine Warriors in Pink baseball cap and a t-shirt that I’ve worn, washed and have on again … it’s a keeper. (Thanks again, Andrew!)

You can get yourself a t-shirt of your own by visiting Fordcares.com and - like last year - 100 percent of net proceeds will go to Komen.

I’m touched by this level of corporate commitment and generosity. Because of that … I’m feeling generous. I’ll mail the baseball cap to one lucky reader (i.e., commenter) this week!

Femara and the Pilot Pen

Monday, August 27th, 2007

PilotPen.gif
I’m not a huge tennis fan (I can count on one finger the number of matches I’ve actually watched). But when a colleague at the Breast Cancer Survival Center here in Fairfield County, CT asked me if I was interested in two comp tickets for survivors sponsored by Femara … I took her up on it because my mother was certain it would be a fantastically fun thing for she and I to do together.

So we went … two survivors, one breast, one ovarian … to the women’s final match at the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament on Saturday. We were there to witness Svetlana Kuznetsova take the trophy after Agnes Szavay succumbed to her ailing back.

Write for Hope

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

writeforhope.jpgOnce again, my husband proved to me he shares my passion for breast cancer related products. He came home from work last night and placed a package of these pink Paper Mate pens on my desk.

So I googled, ‘Write for Hope’ and found this site … what a beautiful looking web page. Make a donation and you can write a note for hope yourself.

Of course, the Pink Ribbon Shop has these and a whole line of office supplies.

Have fun!

Carry for the Cause

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

I never get tired of products that donate to the cause (and my husband knows it, God bless him).

How about these cute totes and laptop cases?

I want one! I don’t really carry my laptop these days but I would if I had a bag this cute. Love it. Thanks for sharing this with me, Tim, so I could share it with my readers.

Kayaks for the Cause

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

eliza_joj8739.jpg
Looks like outdoor sports lovers can also get in on the craze to support the cause. Check it out:

“As part of their commitment to the cause, Ocean Kayak® donates one percent of gross sales from their Venus 10 and Venus 11 kayaks, while Necky® donates in-kind proceeds from the Eliza and Eliza UltraLite kayaks. Since the program’s inception in 2002, Ocean Kayak® and Necky® Kayaks have donated $26,866 to the Breast Cancer Fund and both brands plan to add more kayaks into the program in 2008. “

These are kayaks marketed for women, designed by women … they are all about us. How cool is that? It makes perfect sense for them to support the cause in lieu of their dedication to healthy women.

Here’s a link to a post about the press release!

So I was curious … are their other pink ribbon paddler dreams out there? You betcha.

The Ohio River Way is hosting its fifth annual “Paddlefest” on the Ohio River July 9-10, 2007. And, “Thaxton’s South Fork Canoe Trails, in cooperation with Paddlesports International, will donate their 28 foot Voyager Canoe which will be repainted pink and hold up to 16 breast cancer survivors and patients who will journey 6 miles down the Ohio River on July 10.”photo_pinkcanoe2005.jpg

Quilt Pink Charity Auction

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Oh my goodness … sometimes generosity just blows me over.

quilt.jpgLast September, more than 1,000 quilt shops held Quilt Pink events. Quilt Pink, isn’t that cute? Quilters around the world put together some 4,000 quilts (like the one on the left) and they are now being auctioned off on eBay to raise funds for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. 100% of the sales price will go to this charity. WaaaaHOOOOOOOO!

Love this. LOVE this. Check it out: eBay’s Charity Store!

Apparently there is a company called MissionFish that specializes in eBay auctions for nonprofits. COOL — you can search through their listings by charity, and they’re all in there: American Breast Cancer Foundation, American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, breastcancer.org, CancerCare, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Young Survival Coalition … WAAHOO!

I just get so pumped up when I see people doing such great, great things for the cause, don’t you?

Playtex MoonWalk

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

nina.jpgTen years ago Nina Barough (left) and a group of her supporters walked the New York Marathon in their bras to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.

That must have been a sight — did anybody see that live?

Playtex was one of Nina’s sponsors back then. They were visionaries in the charity world, apparently, because today, the Playtex MoonWalk has become a fabulous charity event in London and has raised over £20 million. This year’s grand event is taking place in just three days!

(Head over to the The Playtex MoonWalk site and also read tips on how to measure for a perfect bra fit as an added bonus for visiting.)

It’s not too late to join the fun or support the cause with a donation — check out how here.

And if you feel it’s too late now, think 2008. I personally could probably even talk my husband into heading to London for this one next year (since he is the one who forwarded me the link … thanks, dear),

What a GOOD search engine

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

I’m talking about GoodSearch, of course. Their motto? “You search, we give.” Powered by Yahoo! Search, GoodSearch is an equally high-quality alternative to Yahoo! Search or even Google … any of the other search engines you use. The difference is that the people behind this philanthropic search engine give 50% of the site’s revenue to charity — and you can choose the beneficiaries.

If you don’t specify a charity for your specific search, GoodSearch chooses a different one every day that reaps the benefit. For example, the charity of the day TODAY (May 16, 2007) is none other than the Lance Armstrong Foundation. How timely for my readers here since I just blogged about LiveStrong two days ago!

So why not bookmark the GoodSearch page, add the GoodSearch icon to your toolbar, make the GoodSearch page your homepage … anything to keep the idea top of mind. Here’s the link again.

Shop (and Crop) for the Cause

Simple concepts if you are a scrapbooker, right?

If you aren’t, let me explain. Scrapbookers love to ‘crop’ their photos and put them into scrapbooks that capture their memories in a way that no simple photo album can. Combining a love of scrapbooking with a passion for helping the cause, well, that’s a win-win situation.

I happen to be one of those scrapbookers; you can read some of the articles I’ve written on the subject over at Garden and Hearth. I also write for a scrapbooking trade journal called Scrapbook Business (formerly Scrapbook Premier).

So I’m privy to lots of industry ongoings, including this one I want to share with you:

carecropcure.jpegA company called Yellow Fence is offering a limited edition shirt and bag to raise money for breast cancer awareness from now until October 31st (check it out at Yellow Fence Products).

Cases for the cause

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

ipodcase.jpg
On May 4th, Belkin announced their new pink cases for the iPod nano designed and sold for the cause. A sport armband and a ‘hope’ remix metal. AWESOME!!

When you click on that link you’ll see the details and their explanation on the benefits of exercise so key to staying healthy, especially for breast cancer survivors. The facts are continually shown in studies: exercise lowers your risk of getting breast cancer (See 2/16/07 CBS News story and 3/1/07 Science Daily article).

10% of the proceeds go to Susan G. Koman with a minimum donation of $100,000 — now that’s what I’m talking about. Thanks Belkin!

Love this iPod case … many thanks to the girls at Shiny Shiny and my husband for pointing out this pink product!

Colleges Against Cancer

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

relay.jpgLast Friday I had the honor of speaking at Fairfield University’s first ever Relay for Life event as an alumni survivor speaker. (Here was their newspaper’s coverage prior to the event.)

The event was part of the American Cancer Society Program Colleges Against Cancer.

The evening was fantastic for more reasons than I can count, but let me give you the highlights here:

  • The students raised over $26,000 for the American Cancer Society.
  • They had over 120 participants and dozens of adult survivors and caregivers in attendance.
  • The co-chairs thought to host a survivor dinner and reception and catered to our every need respectfully the entire evening.
  • I watched these kids read the names on the luminaries covering the center of the gymnasium lit in honor or memory of survivors.
  • Young and old, individuals walked the track all night long without fail
  • The tables surrounding the track were promoting awareness and wellness and the students were actively participating and paying attention to the messages.
  • I was seriously proud to be there, to be an alum and a part of such a giving college community, and a survivor in that crowd.

Sometimes the blessings of breast cancer show up brilliantly in front of your eyes.

The JANE Guide to Breast Health

    Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

I got this email blast today (and I’ll share it verbatim with you all because I think it is GREAT!):

JANE magazine discovered in a recent survey of their readers that a shocking 75% of women say they are unhappy with their breasts. With that in mind, the May issue of JANE features “The JANE Guide to Breast Health” - a comprehensive feature promoting physical and emotional breast health. The guide focuses on positive self-image beginning with a personal essay by Editor Annemarie Conte discussing how she grew to love her asymmetrical breasts. Following the essay is a full-page of photos of real (100% natural) breasts in a variety of shapes and sizes to show readers the large range that is “normal.” The photos combat the media bombardment of false images of “perfection” that just leave women feeling bad about themselves. Each of the photographs is accompanied by the real woman’s reason for loving her breasts. The page also calls out to Jane readers to submit photos of their own breasts and their reasons for loving them to be posted on Jane’s website, janemag.com.

Geralynn Lucas, author of “Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy” will be blogging for Jane’s website, janemag.com, for the month of May. Her first posting on “Inner Cleavage” is up today. “Inner cleavage,” according to Lucas, “is a state of mind. It is a belief that you are sexy regardless of your cup size. It means loving the boobs you own. It doesn’t require a plastic surgeon, implants, padding or push up bras. It means that I am not only my bra size.”

The May issue hits newsstands nationwide on April 24th.”

    Support a Breast Cancer Survivor

    Monday, April 9th, 2007

dsc02189.jpgToday I’m drinking my “to go” cup of coffee in my new Einstein Bros. cause worthy travel mug. My husband brought this pink beauty home for me over the weekend; $1.50 was donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as a result of his purchase of $16.99.

Today, lots of people sport pink ribbons, or use a “pink” products, as a way of showing their support for a survivor friend or family member. It’s easy to do because the retail world is covered with wonderful “pink” products. And let’s face it, it means so much to us survivors, even if it seems overkill at times.

When my husband wears his Making Strides Against Breast Cancer shirt, I am filled with compassion and love; he loves me so much he’ll tell the world that he supports me in my fight. And forget it, if my kids want to wear a pink ribbon pin on their clothes? I just about rip my face apart with my smile.

One of the best ways to show support for someone with breast cancer is to show them that you think about the disease and their battle with it all the time — because God knows they think about it all the time.

So thanks Einstein Bros. — for a good cup of Joe and a good mug to go.

For readers who are new to my writing … when I discover cause worthy products that I love, I’ll showcase them (and in case you are a marketer, the greater the contribution to the cause, the greater my respect for you, so thank you!).
